The first iteration of Change From Within was created as a research project and live performance during my time at the University of Washington in 2017. Over the course of 9 months I conducted a qualitative study interviewing leaders in the environmental field about the lack of diversity and potential solutions for change. The interviewees had a wide range of cultural backgrounds and expertise, their stories providing a powerful framework for the choreography, original music, and dancers to bring their truths to life.

This first iteration of Change from Within in 2017 had two performances, one at the Olympic Sculpture Park and the other at The Samuel E. Kelly Ethnic and Cultural Center as part of the “Racial Ecologies Conference”, both in Seattle, WA.

The facilitation following the performance became a key aspect for deepening the audience’s understanding by creating space to reflect on the meaning of the content, and what we can do to start creating change.

The film, “Change From Within” was featured in the University of Washington’s Earth Lab Showcase in 2020.

In 2019 I had the opportunity to re-envision Change From Within as a film feature for the Salish Sea Equity and Justice Symposium. The premiere, at the Seattle Aquarium, provided an opportunity for conference attendees and the public to experience the project in its fullest form.

To create this film I worked with powerful production collaborators including: Andrew Imanaka (DP), Avi Loud (Editor), Eli Hetrik (Composer), and Jesslyn Allegre (Producer & Architect).

Movement collaborators: Megumi Hosaka, Esra Cömert-Morishige, Peter Kohring, Lisa Kwak, Chris Hill, Maxie “Mystique” Jamal, Gabriella Czarniak, and Haley Shannon.

Styling collaborators: Prairie Underground, Gabriel Bello Diaz of Efficio Fashion, and Chris Hill.
